Carney says failing to honour Stelco commitments would be a ‘mistake’
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded Thursday to questions about Cleveland-Cliffs’ takeover of Stelco as Ottawa weighs legal action over layoffs affecting up to 500 steel workers. Asked whether approving the acquisition was a mistake, Carney said, “The mistake here would be Cleveland-Cliffs not respecting the obligations, the commitments that they made in the acquisition.” The company denies breaching its agreement with Ottawa, which includes employment commitments until 2029.
