A detective with the Ottawa Police Service has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in relation to an incident last month involving a 51-year-old man in Carlsbad Springs.
Global News speaks with the SIU's director about the agency and how it operates. Joseph Martino also outlined the SIU's plans to collect race-based data, but noted mental health data isn't proactively tracked and reported on.
The SIU said it's interviewed three civilian witnesses and has completed a canvas of the area in East Gwillimbury, where a man who was involved with a stabbing was fatally shot.
Police say officers were called to the area of Greenway Park off of Greenside Drive at around 10:30 a.m. Monday over concerns about a man believed to be in possession of a handgun.
SIU officials said the man's health deteriorated after he was taken to a hospital by Peel Regional Police. He died days after being transferred to an intensive care unit.
"While the investigation is ongoing, the details of the interviews and the video footage will not be released in an effort to ensure the memories of other potential witnesses are not tainted."
The Special Investigations Unit said it has determined "there are no reasonable ground to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man's death."
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says a Kingston police officer in charge of a prisoner was not responsible for the injuries sustained after she overdosed in a cell.
