Berry Vrbanovic easily wins second term as Kitchener mayor

Berry Vrbanovic cruised to a second term as mayor of Kitchener on Monday night.

Vrbanovic, who served on local council for years before becoming mayor in 2014, was expected to win handily in 2018.

Narine Sookram, Myron Steinman and Jiri Marek all failed to make any sort of impact as Vrbanovic collected more than 85 per cent of the vote.

Sookram finished second with less than six per cent of the vote.

Across the wards, most of the incumbents held onto their seats except in Ward 8 where Margaret Johnston knocked off Zyg Janecki.

She will be joined by two other new women on council this year.

In Ward 4, Christine Michaud was elected while voters chose to support Debbie Chapman in Ward 9. In both cases, the incumbents chose not to seek re-election.

Voter turnout was down from around 30 per cent in 2014 to around 28 per cent in 208.

The new council will be officially sworn in on Dec. 3.

Several local municipalities including Wilmot and Woolwich had issues with online voting, which prevented the region from announcing who would be the next regional chair.

Ken Seiling retired as regional chair after more than 30 years on the job.

As a reminder, these results are unofficial. The official results will be released later this week.
