British Columbia's Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has rescinded multiple evacuation alerts as the threat from a series of wildfires appears to have passed.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen said everyone under evacuation order could return home on Monday but must be ready to leave again at a moment's notice.

RCMP warned of the wildfire on Sunday afternoon, saying the blaze was affecting the area and officers were conducting "tactical evacuations" of homes.

Volunteer firefighters from the community are responding to the blaze with support from the B.C. Wildfire Service, officials said on Wednesday.

After the railway ceased operations in the 1970s, the province acquired the tunnel but eventually deteriorating conditions made it unsafe and led to its closure in the 90s.

The initiative has many people, including residents, business owners in affected communities and local governments, expressing some serious concerns.

The initiative will see Fortis cut off power in the mentioned communities, if warranted,  during extreme weather events.
