Manitoba’s James Reimer traded by Toronto Maple Leafs

With the NHL’s trade deadline just around the corner the San Jose Sharks acquired goalie James Reimer from the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of a four player trade on Saturday. Along with Reimer the Sharks also pick up forward Jeremy Morin in exchange for goalie Alex Stalock, forward Ben Smith and a conditional 2018 fourth round draft pick.

Reimer, 27, played six seasons with the Maple Leafs.  The Morweena, Manitoba native was drafted by the Leafs in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He appeared in 207 games with the Leafs where he posted an 85-76-23 record with a .914 save percentage and a 2.83 goals against average. Reimer also had 11 shutouts.

“James is an experienced NHL goaltender who will help add to our depth at that position as we head down the stretch run of the season,” Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said through a media release. “Jeremy gives our group another versatile forward and a player that our coaching staff is familiar with. We’re excited to add them both to our organization.”

Reimer is playing out the final season of a two-year, $4.6 million contract. He’s earning $2 million this season and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Reimer also represented Canada twice at the World Championships in 2011 and again in 2014.
