TOGO, Sask. – Flooding may have caused a Via train to derail near Togo, Saskatchewan on Sunday evening.
The westbound train was heading from Winnipeg to Churchill, Man. when it went over a section of track that had been washed out.
“Water basically … was undermining the track and it caused a slight derailment,” said Via spokesperson Jacques Gagnon.

“I’ll characterize it as a slight derailment because no cars were (tipped over), they were still upright. There were no locomotives sideways or passenger cars sideways.”
Two engines and one car came off the tracks.
According to the Transportation Safety Board, there were seven passengers and four crew on board.

RCMP say no one was injured in the derailment but a small fire broke out in one of the engines.
It was quickly extinguished.
Via says it could be 48 hours before the route can be used again.
