WATCH ABOVE: It’s a big weekend for some Calgarians who are like “toys come to life” for the little ones. Here’s Gil Tucker on two sci-fi squads joining forces to help kids – Nov 18, 2016

It’s a real sci-fi mash-up in Calgary this weekend, guaranteed to beam up the spirits of a lot of families.

It’s all happening as the Comic and Entertainment Expo holds its first-ever Christmas market.

As part of it, kids will get a chance to get a photo with Santa that comes with a real twist – St. Nick will be sitting in a replica of “The Captain’s Chair” from the original Star Trek TV series.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

And alongside him, in place of elves, Santa will be flanked by Stormtroopers from the Star Wars movies.

Calgarian Lori Shortt is one of the volunteers donning a Stormtrooper suit for the occasion.

A member of a local Star Wars group that regularly attends charity events in Trooper suits, Shortt is looking forward to being part of the Santa photos.

“I love seeing the kids’ faces,” Shortt said. “It’s like their toys have come to life and they think you’ve stepped right off the movie screen.”

Of course, on that movie screen, Stormtroopers are usually on the dark side with Darth Vader, but Shortt says it’s a lot different when members of her group suit up.

And they’re definitely doing that at this event, as proceeds from the photos with Santa and the Stormtroopers will go to the Make-A-Wish foundation, which arranges experiences for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Comic Expo Christmas Market takes place Saturday, Nov. 19 and Sunday Nov. 20 at Calgary’s Stampede Park.
