Police have identified the man who was shot and killed in southwest Calgary on Wednesday.
Police said Avinder Singh Toor was killed in Crestmont, in what they believe was a targeted attack.
A CPS news release issued Thursday afternoon confirmed that a burned-out vehicle that police believe is connected to the investigation was found by Cochrane RCMP shortly after the shooting at a rural location outside of that town.
Calgary police said they are unable to disclose how many shots were fired or how many suspects they have as those details are part of the investigation.
“We can confidently say no nearby houses were struck by bullets,” police said.
On Wednesday, police were called to the 500 block of Cresthaven Place S.W., in the community of Crestmont at about 1:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting, and later confirmed a man was found dead.
“At this time, investigators believe this was not a random attack,” police said in a news release.
Homicide arrived at the scene just after 3 p.m. and police said an autopsy is expected to be done in the coming days.
“This shooting took place in the middle of the day in a neighbourhood area where people were out walking their dogs. We are currently speaking with a number of witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact police,” Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said.
“We will not tolerate this kind of reckless disregard for public safety and will dedicate as many resources as it takes to finding the person or persons responsible.”
On Thursday, CPS Chief Mark Neufeld provided further details on what police believe to have happened.
“A vehicle pulled up near the victim, one or suspects got out, shot the victim and his dog, and then drove off,” Neufeld said.
“An unidentified vehicle that was later located by the RCMP near Cochrane may be connected.”
Neufeld said the homicide unit will be releasing further details about the series of events, adding that the entire unit is working to identify the individuals responsible.
The CPS chief also said an autopsy had been completed by the chief medical examiner.
Multiple witnesses told Global News they heard several loud bangs, which they believed were gunshots, in the area and came outside to find a number of emergency vehicles flocking to the area.
