While he will not be the next prime minister, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is projected to keep his seat in the riding of Burnaby South.
As of 10:35 p.m. with 180 out of 191 polls reporting, Singh held the lead with 39.7 per cent of the vote. The Liberals’ Brea Huang Sami was in second place with 30.6 per cent and the Conservatives’ Likky Lavji was in third with 22.7 per cent.
Singh won the NDP leadership in 2017, but could not find the right place to run in a byelection until 2019.
That’s when MP Kennedy Stewart left to run successfully as mayor of Vancouver, and Singh defeated Conservative Jay Shin in Burnaby South by 6.8 per cent.
He ran again in the 2019 general election, securing the seat with 37.7 per cent of ballots.
