A 45-year-old man and a 59-year-old man have both been charged with careless driving after a road rage altercation near Highway 60 and Highway 39.
Both Leduc and Devon RCMP responded to the scene at about 2:20 p.m. Thursday.
Two vehicles were heading west on Highway 39 and both stopped at the traffic circle, RCMP said in a news release Friday.
“A collision occurred between both vehicles as well as a confrontation between the drivers at the traffic circle.”
A video that RCMP confirmed is of the same incident, posted on social media and shared on TikTok by mommabags, shows a white SUV pull up on the right side of a white Ford truck. The driver of the SUV appears to roll down the window, hit the side mirror and yell at the other driver before driving forward.
The video appears to show the white truck pull forward and ram into the back end of the SUV before the SUV turns back around. As the SUV slowly pulls off to the right side of the road, the truck appears to hit the back corner of the SUV again. Both drivers leave their vehicles and appear to have a verbal confrontation.
“There was a physical confrontation between the two drivers,” Const. Sheri-Lee Smith with Leduc RCMP said.
However, no other charges are pending at this time.
“The investigation does not support charges of assault. Both involved parties consented to the confrontation.”
The video shows visible damage to the SUV, including a flat tire and damage to the back right bumper.
Smith did not have an update on the damage on either vehicle. She said no injuries were reported.
It is not known what led up to the collision or verbal confrontation or what was said between the two drivers.
Smith said people witnessing a careless driving or road rage incident can call either 911 or the non-emergency police line, depending on how at risk public safety is.
She also had advice for anyone involved in a road rage interaction.
“We would always say… not get out (of the car) in any sort of confrontational manner, not to confront anybody; to pull over in a safe location and call police for assistance.”
RCMP have a copy of the video circulating online and statements from witnesses but said anyone who has information that might be relevant to the investigation can contact Leduc RCMP.
Both men have been charged with careless driving under the Traffic Safety Act. That charge typically comes with a fine, Smith said.
The men are scheduled to appear in Leduc court “at a later date.”
