Thérèse Tanguay Dion, mother of Céline Dion, dead at 92

Thérèse Tanguay Dion, the mother of famed Quebec singer and entertainer Céline Dion, has died at the age of 92.

“Maman, we love you so much,” the superstar wrote ahead of her concert in Miama, Fla. on Friday. “We dedicate tonight’s show to you and I’ll sing to you with all my heart.”

The native of the Gaspé Peninsula was the mother of 14 children. Maman Dion, as she was affectionately known in the province, died peacefully in her sleep early Friday morning surrounded by her loved ones.

Aside from caring for her family, Tanguay Dion had her own cooking show on French-language network TVA. She was known for devoting her time to helping children in need with her Maman Dion foundation.

The death of Tanguay Dion has prompted an outpouring of condolences from politicians and personalities from across the province.

Quebec Premier François Legault said the loss is felt by the entire province and extended his condolences to her loved ones.

“A remarkable woman, so generous, so loving, who devoted her whole life to the well-being of her family,” wrote Legault.

Quebec Culture Minister Nathalie Roy said it was “with sadness” she learned of the news and offered her sympathies to the Dion family.

Pascal Bérubé, the interim leader of the Parti Québécois, described Tanguay Dion as a person who was well appreciated by Quebecers and said she worked hard to help children in vulnerable situations.
