Toronto police say they are investigating after two men, including one man who used a wheelchair, died following a shooting near Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue early Saturday.
Police said they received a call around 1:30 a.m. for reports of gunshots in the area and later found two men with injuries at a building on Emmett Avenue.
Shortly after the incident, Duty Insp. Norm Proctor told reporters one man was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man was transported to a local trauma centre, where he was also pronounced dead.
Proctor said a third person later walked into a hospital, but it was initially unclear if they were connected to the homicide.
However, police later said it is believed that the third victim, who is also a man and had gunshot wounds, was injured in the same incident. He had serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police Chief Mark Saunders visited the scene Saturday afternoon along with Supt. Ron Taverner.
Speaking to reporters, Saunders said it is believed the three victims were standing outside of the building socializing when the shots rang out, adding that the shooting was “absolutely” targeted towards one of the victims.
“It is very clear that this suspect intended to shoot either all three — but definitely one — of the three victims that were here early this morning,” Saunders said.
One of the two men killed in the incident used wheelchair, he said.
Saunders described the suspect as a male, approximately six feet tall with a muscular build and short dreadlocks.
He said the suspect is considered armed and dangerous and was last seen going west from the scene.
Arban Salihu said he lives above where the shooting took place and witnessed the incident after he went on his balcony to have a cigarette.
Salihu said he heard at least six or seven shots and saw two people who were injured.
“He was shooting. The guy fell down screaming and he keep shooting in the back,” he told reporters at the scene. “I couldn’t sleep all night.”
There is video evidence of the shooting, but investigators are still looking to speak to anyone who has additional information or video footage, Saunders said.
There is no word on the victims’ ages or identities.
