West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Asst. Chief Jeff Bush told Global News no one was hurt, and the fire did not affect the BC SPCA West Vancouver Branch next door.

“[Crews] were able to darken the fire down, but due to the open floor space the fire did spread quite rapidly throughout the structure,” Bush said.

The SPCA said there was “very minor damage” to their building, but confirmed all the animals inside were unharmed.

The shelter is closed for the day due to road closures as fire officials investigate the scene.
