Though the Clippers are currently first in the eight-team league with 28 points, the Gloucester Hornets are just one point behind and have a couple of games in hand, meaning the tides could turn for the Kingston team.

Further behind, the Ottawa International Fury are in third place with 24 points. They, too, have two games in hand.

The Clippers play their final game of the regular season against Ottawa West at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, at George Richardson Stadium.

“For us, it’s absolutely a must-win situation,” said veteran striker Breanna Burton.

“We’ve had a very solid season, and we need three points to keep our hopes alive for (a) top spot. We know a number of things need to happen for us to win the championship, but the only thing we can do is win Sunday’s game,” the striker said.

Burton enters the final game as the league’s top scorer with 15 goals. She has a five-goal lead on Gloucester’s Bryanna Pidgeon.

“I’ve been very blessed to play with some strong players who are able to get me the ball,” added Burton, a former star striker with the Queen’s University Gaels.

“It’s been a lot of fun this summer and hopefully, with some help, we can win the league championship for the first time in the team’s history.”
