A man accused of making threatening and indecent calls to B.C. women over a period of six months is facing 70 criminal charges.
Joel Perry, 33, of Qualicum Beach is alleged to have made the calls to women across the province, but mostly in Metro Vancouver.
The RCMP alleges Perry made both phone and video calls to harass the women.
According to police, Perry at times accurately identified the women by name and address, and claimed he had been watching them through cameras he’d allegedly installed in their homes.
He is alleged to have demanded the women engage in sexually explicit conversations — and threatened to kill their family members if they did not comply, according to police.
The majority of the calls were received by women at their homes, but several women working in lingerie and swimwear stores also got calls, police said.
Police believe Perry used software to disguise his phone number, and that he used social media to gather information about the women.
Perry was arrested in May, after what police described as a “complex and technical investigation.”
The charges against Perry include 31 counts of harassing/indecent phone calls, 18 counts of criminal harassment, 13 counts of uttering threats and eight counts of extortion.
According to police, the investigation involved officers in multiple jurisdictions, but it was an officer in Surrey who cracked the case.
Perry was originally due in court on Thursday, but has had the date moved to Aug. 9.
