Martin Short addresses Oscar hosting buzz

TORONTO – The buzz backstage at the Canadian Screen Awards and on Twitter on Sunday night was not about the winners or losers but the performance of host Martin Short.

“martin short’s brilliance on #CdnSceenAwards should be required viewing for all awards hosts, never mind seth macfarlane,” tweeted Pam Kapoor.

Tweeted Ron Tite: “I think Martin Short just auditioned to host Oscars. And they should give it to him.”

After the show, Short said asking if he would ever host the Oscars was akin to asking if he will ever join the space program.

“It’s really a daunting thing,” he said.

Short said he believes Seth MacFarlane did a good job at this year’s Academy Awards. “I thought Seth was fantastic and adventurous,” he said, “and himself.”

Short said entertaining an audience of show business movers and shakers as well as a TV audience is not an easy task.

“If you’ve done it you kind of understand the ups and downs. You don’t want to be too bland, you don’t want to be too far and you have to respect the fact that you’re there as a host saying ‘come to my party.’”

Short, who joked that he has “always dreamed” of hosting the Canadian Screen Awards, also told reporters combining the Geminis and Genies into one show was a good idea.

“When I was a kid growing up in Hamilton there were only the Academy Awards and the Emmys and the Tonys and that was it,” he said. “To combine them and to makeit more exciting in one night makes complete and utter sense.”
