Dwayne Johnson’s daughter chosen as ‘Golden Globe Ambassador’

The Golden Globes have revealed the identity of the young woman who’ll serve as “Miss Golden Globe” at the upcoming award ceremony in January, while also announcing that the title will be replaced by something more reflective of modern culture.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Wednesday that it was retiring the “Miss Golden Globe” title in favour of something more gender-inclusive, revealing that Simone Garcia Johnson, the daughter of Dwayne Johnson will be the first-ever “Globe Ambassador.”

The title of Miss Golden Globe has traditionally gone to the daughter of a Hollywood star, with past honourees including such celebrity progeny as Melanie Griffith, Dakota Johnson and Laura Dern.

Johnson, 16, was introduced at a ceremony by last years Miss Golden Globe trio of Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet Stallone, daughters of Sylvester Stallone, during a party at Catch LA in West Hollywood, hosted by the HFPA and InStyle.

“As we look forward to the 75th anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members decided to expand this role to embody the HFPA’s philanthropic efforts year round,” said HFPA president Meher Tatna. “The honouree will now be referred to as the Golden Globe Ambassador, and we could not think of a better representative than Simone to carry on this tradition, as her values closely reflect everything that HFPA stands for.”

In her new role as 2018 Golden Globe Ambassador, Garcia Johnson will guide presenters on and off stage during the ceremony as well as hand out awards, and announced that she’ll also be partnering with GlobalGirl Media, an organization that empowers young women in disadvantaged areas by providing them the tools they need to become journalists, giving them the opportunity to let their voices be heard.

“I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in a household with strong role models and feel so honoured to represent the HFPA for its 75th anniversary,” Garcia Johnson said at the event. “As the newly minted Golden Globe Ambassador, I hope to serve as a role model to young people everywhere and empower them to speak out on issues they are passionate about.”

The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, Jan. 7; a host for this year’s show has yet to be announced.
