WATCH ABOVE: It looks like those waiting to see the new refurbished Reversing Falls Restaurant in Saint John will have to wait a little longer. Although it was originally hoped to open in June, the man behind the project now says it will likely be in the new year. As Global's Andrew Cromwell reports it might result in an even better product in the end – Sep 1, 2016

It appears it will be the new year before the Reversing Falls Restaurant’s new look will be unveiled.

Businessman Max Kotlowski was granted a 60-year lease on the property in west Saint John. The area is a popular tourist destination but the restaurant building itself was bound for demolition until Kotlowski stepped in.

It was hoped the work would be complete this year. Kotlowski plans numerous upgrades to the property and says the delay may result in a better overall product.

“We’ve added a wine cellar, we’re even working on a greenhouse idea right now,” Kotlowski said.

Nevertheless, the compete redo of this space promises to be spectacular, starting with a skywalk that should be installed this month.

“It will come out 25-feet from the corner of the building over towards the direction of the largest whirlpool,” he said.

Initial reports suggested about a $500,000 investment. Kotlowski admits he’s likely gone over that amount by 100 per cent.

“I’m spending a lot more than I planned, but this site is totally unique,” he said. “This is too good. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me.”

The delayed opening is of no concern at Discover Saint John, which oversees Saint John’s tourism sector. Executive director Victoria Clarke says there’s a bigger picture.

“The original vision to what the current vision is are miles apart and so it was supposed to be a refurb, now it is a complete re-imagination,” Clarke said.

Outside construction is expected to be complete in November. A spring opening is now anticipated.
