WINNIPEG — He’s vocal in the stadium but also on stage.

Austin From, the rugged Manitoba Blizzard captain, is a crooner.

“If someone wants to go out there and write a musical about lacrosse and they need a singer, I’m your guy,” said From.

For most of his life, the Winnipegger has been juggling lacrosse and lyrics. His performances in musical theatre started around the same time he picked up the sport.

“I knew he had some talent,” said Blizzard head coach Trevor Anyon. “I didn’t think he was that diverse.”

Just don’t ask the baritone to break out any ballads in a battle.

“I won’t sing during a game,” laughed From. “Communication is key though. I definitely use my big voice.”

From’s chants have not only turned him into a leader with the Blizzard but also a star in this week’s production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Two accomplishments he credits to constant rehearsals.

“If you want to make it anywhere in anything, you have to hone your craft,” said From. “Work on your skill, practice and love what you do.”

The Blizzard play their first game of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season in Winnipeg this Saturday afternoon. Smokey Joe’s Cafe meanwhile runs until Friday evening at the Gas Station Arts Centre.
