No doubt about it, Hawaii is an ideal destination for active families. With so many tempting options, families need to carefully pick and choose their activities if they want to stay on budget. Here’s a look at some family-friendly excursions on Oahu you won’t want to miss.
Surfing
Faith Surf School on Waikiki Beach serves up quality lessons for all ability levels – especially beginners. The waves are gentle, the water is warm and our family managed to stand up almost every time. One of the hardest parts is identifying which wave to catch and they take that challenge out for you (if you want). Instructors guide you into the waves so you can experiences the joy of surfing right away. Lessons are available for kids five years and older. More info: www.faithsurfschool.com
Sea Life Park
This is the place to go if you’re looking for direct contact with marine mammals. From manta rays to sea lions, sharks and penguins, the aquarium offers educational and interactive experiences for all ages. If you’ve ever wanted to swim with the dolphins or get up close and personal with a sea turtle, schedule a half day to visit this park. More info: www.sealifeparkhawaii.com

Swim at Halona Blowhole
This is by far my favourite swimming spot on Oahu. Most people stop at this lookout to spot whales, but if you bring bathing suits and a towel, you’ll have a lot more fun. The swimming hole here is quite deep – so not ideal for toddlers without a life jacket, but when we visited there were several tots braving the waves beside us. Walk down a lava rock staircase to the beach, suss out the caves or cliff jump into the turquoise waters. More info: Halona Blowhole
Hawaiian Canoeing
It’s pretty amazing how the Polynesians came to Hawaii on narrow outrigger canoes from the South Pacific. Step back in time by going for a float with Hawaiian Ocean Adventures, an independent company that anchors on the beach right in front of Disney’s Aulani resort. You don’t have to be a guest of Mickey to take to the seas in this traditional canoe hand built by master Hawaiian canoe builders. Anyone can go for a cruise where, if you’re lucky you’ll spot the trifecta of green sea turtles, dolphins and whales. The hour long sailing trip is offered for kids two-years and up depending on sailing conditions. Tip: morning is the best time to view marine life whether you’re snorkelling or on a boat trip. When the wind blows in each afternoon, it makes the water choppy and can be more difficult to spot fish. More info: www.hawaiianoceanadventures.com
Hit up Happy Hour
Eating out night after night on vacation really taxes the wallet, but it doesn’t have to. What’s particularly awesome about Honolulu is the abundance of Happy Hours. Doraku, a fusion-sushi joint in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center offers an array of apps from $2 to $6 between 3 to 7 p.m., or take it up a notch tucking into the Sunset Menu at BLT Steak attached to Trump Waikiki.
