VERNON, B.C. – The list of suspicious fires in the Vernon area continues to grow. Monday night, fire crews were called to Waddington Drive around 11:15 P.M. A stack of about 400 apple bins were on fire in a cluster of about 10,000. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze before it spread through the thousands of bins sitting behind Growers Supply Company. “You look at this big wood bin pile and you know what has been going on up in Vernon, and you kind of think maybe in hindsight we should have known we were going to be targeted at one point,” says Cam Stewart, the Northern Regional Manager for the Growers Supply Company. "It makes you uneasy for sure." The BC Tree Fruits Cooperative, which owns the destroyed and damaged bins, says it will be working to make sure there are enough bins for growers come harvest time. Police are once again appealing to the public for tips that might bring an end to the spate of fires. “We need a break in this case. I believe the community as a whole [is] starting to be very concerned about the number of fires we have,” says Gord Molendyk, with the Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP. There have been more than twenty suspicious fires in the Vernon area since early May. Other targets have included abandoned buildings, boats and the Kin Race Track grandstand.
