2 in hospital after wrong-way driver hits vehicle, pedestrian in Maple Ridge: RCMP

Police are investigating a serious crash in Maple Ridge that closed part of the Lougheed Highway for hours Thursday. Two people have been taken to hospital -- one with serious injuries. – Apr 27, 2023

Two people were taken to hospital, one of them seriously injured, following a major collision in Maple Ridge on Thursday.

In a media release, Ridge Meadows RCMP said the crash happened around 10:40 a.m. at the Lougheed Highway and Laity Street.

Police said a vehicle was reported speeding the wrong way in a westbound lane on Lougheed Highway and hit a curb near Laity Street, before crashing into another vehicle and a pedestrian.

Officers with the detachment’s Road Safety Target Team (RSTT) were first on scene and “performed life-saving measures on the pedestrian,” police said.

Firefighters and paramedics took over life-saving measures before transporting the victims to hospital, police said.

Footage from the scene showed a silver van rolled over and crashed into the parking lot of Benz Transmissions. A black SUV could also be seen on its side, close to the van.

Yellow tarps and incident markers were observed on the ground around the crash site.

The RCMP said its Serious Crimes Unit and Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services along with the RSTT are probing “all potential causes” of the crash.

Eastbound traffic on Lougheed Highway reopened late Thursday evening, but the route remained closed westbound.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has video footage shot in the area at the time is asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251.
