Hanks reveals Type 2 diabetes diagnosis

TORONTO — Actor Tom Hanks revealed Monday he is living with Type 2 diabetes.

During an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman, the 57-year-old actor said he was recently diagnosed after two decades of symptoms.

“I went to the doctors and they said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been living with since you were 36? Well you’ve graduated. You’ve got Type 2 diabetes,'” Hanks recalled.

The Captain Phillips star said he is working on getting himself into better shape to control his condition.

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, causing glucose to build up in the blood.

Symptoms include unusual thirst, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, blurred vision and a numbness in the hands and feet.

Actress Delta Burke, singer Patti LaBelle, comedian Sherri Shepherd and tennis pro Billie Jean King are some of the stars who have said they were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
