The incident happened around 8 a.m. at a home on Copley Street, west of Altona Road and Twyn Rivers Drive.

Durham police Const. George Tudos said officers responded to the home for a domestic dispute and found the victim with significant injuries.

Tudos said a middle-aged woman was found suffering from life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre.

“We do have one person in custody,” he said.

“Investigators have advised that the relationship is mother and son. He was taken into custody.”

Ariana Heerman and her sister Hayleigh live across the street and said they heard someone screaming.

“I heard her screaming at the top of her lungs,” said Ariana. “Basically she was saying somebody help me.”

The woman said when she looked over, she unknowingly witnessed what was taking place.

“I saw that guy over her, it was like basically looked like he was giving her chest compressions. But it wasn’t that,” she said.

When she realized what was happening, she called 911.

“I wish more people could have come to help her,” she said. “I didn’t know what to do at the time.”

The incident has left neighbours in the close-knit community in shock.

“It’s really scary, you don’t know what’s going on,” said Amanda Susnowski, who lives just up the street.

“It’s a quiet street, friendly neighbourhood,” she said.

Durham police were canvassing the area for witnesses and any information that can help the investigation.
