TORONTO – The Toronto Maple Leafs have locked up star forward Phil Kessel to a long-term contract extension.
The two sides have agreed to terms on an eight-year extension worth US$64 million.
The club confirmed the deal on Twitter with a photo of Kessel signing the contract.
“Phil Kessel is one of the premier wingers and elite goal scorers in the National Hockey League today,” said Leafs GM Dave Nonis in a media release. “He wanted to be a Maple Leaf long term and we’re very pleased that Phil will be a part of our core group of players in Toronto until the 2021-22 season.”
Kessel had 20 goals and 32 assists for the Maple Leafs over last season’s 48-game schedule.
He has 379 points (185-194) in 504 regular-season games over seven seasons with Toronto and Boston.
The 26-year-old right-winger was drafted by the Bruins with the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
He was dealt to Toronto four years ago for two first-round picks and a second-round selection. The Bruins used the picks to draft Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight.
