A serious collision between a semi and an SUV sent five young men to hospital and shut down an intersection in southeast Edmonton Monday afternoon.
Edmonton police said the crash involving multiple vehicles happened at the intersection of Millbourne Road East and 76 Street.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services was called around 11:45 a.m. to help at the scene of a head-on collision between a semi and SUV in Mill Woods.
Edmonton police said a Dodge Journey was travelling south on 76 Street from 51 Avenue, while at the same time a semi hauling a trailer was performing a U-turn at 76 Street and Millbourne Road, when a collision occurred.
While the driver of the tractor trailer did not report any injuries, police said all five of the young people in the Dodge were injured and taken to hospital.
Alberta Health Services said they were all boys or men between the ages of 16 and 19. One was left in serious, life-threatening condition, while the other four suffered minor injuries.
The city had previously said it was believed six to seven people were hurt.
EPS said major collision officers believe speed on the Dodge Journey’s part may have been a factor in the collision.
As of 7 p.m., the intersection where the crash happened had been reopened.
