Fire in Vancouver high-rise leaves one dead

A fire in a an apartment in Vancouver’s West End has left a senior dead.

Flames broke out in an 11th-floor unit of the high-rise at Pendrell and Gilford Streets Saturday evening.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services said Sunday that a 75-year-old man, who had been hurt in the fire, had died.

Firefighters evacuated the entire building, but were able to extinguish the flames within minutes.

The cause of the fire appears to be smoking related, firefighters said.
