Police seeking witnesses to fatal collision between dump truck, van in south-end Ottawa

One person is dead after a collision between a van and a dump truck on a south Ottawa road Thursday morning, according to police.

Ottawa Fire Services said they were contacted by Ottawa police at 8:43 a.m. about a collision between a truck and a van on Mitch Owens Road near Ramsayville Road, with subsequent callers indicating someone might be trapped in the vehicle.

Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and confirmed two people were trapped in the “heavily damaged” van.

One person was freed from the wreck after just a few minutes while extricating the other individual required specialized tools. The second person was freed shortly after 9 a.m.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service said in a release that a male in his 20s was taken to hospital via ambulance with serious injuries while another was airlifted with “life-threatening injuries.” A third person, a male in his 60s, was treated for injuries on scene and was deemed to be in stable condition.

Police said in a later update that the person airlifted to hospital, a 35-year-old man, had succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators are asking anyone who might have witnessed the collision or have dash-cam footage of the incident to contact them at 613-236-1222 ext. 2481.
