OPP Const. Tim Dunnah told Global News it’s believed some sort of road rage incident and fight happened at around 6:45 p.m. on the westbound express lanes of the highway in the area of Avenue Road.

He later said in an update with reporters that a collision may have happened between two vehicles that prompted an interaction between the man and another person outside of the vehicles.

“Information was exchanged between drivers,” Dunnah said in the update.

“A male pedestrian was walking eastbound in the westbound lanes on the right shoulder and was struck by a transport truck.”

A Toronto Paramedics spokesperson told Global News the man died at the scene. The spokesperson said another person was later taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Dunnah initially said a person was taken into custody, but later corrected that statement and noted no one was in custody as of Friday night.

He said officers were called with reports of a collision and since the man was fatally hit by the truck as they were responding, Ontario’s police watchdog (the Special Investigations Unit) was notified about the incident. However, the Special Investigations Unit said Saturday morning that they were not investigating.

Officers closed a portion of Highway 401 for the investigation.

Anyone with information was asked to call police at 416-235-4981.
