Peel Regional Police said emergency crews were called to Nasmith and Nuffield streets, near Dixie Road and Bovaird Drive East, at around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Investigators said the woman, identified by family as Jasbir Dhillon, sustained serious injuries after being bitten by a dog and was taken to a local hospital. Jasbir’s family said she is still in hospital after having surgery on her arm.

Patwinder Dhillon, the woman’s daughter-in-law, said they were out for a walk when the incident happened.

“They (bit) the arm. She’s almost screaming, screaming, and then I screamed too,” Patwinder said, estimating it went on for about a minute-and-a-half.

She said the dog’s owner got the dog off and gave his phone number before leaving.

A neighbour who called 911 said he saw Jasbir on the sidewalk. He said he saw a big gouge in her arm and a little bit of blood on the mouth of one of the dogs.

Global News located the owner of the dog involved in the incident. He has two pitbull-mix dogs named Lady and Zeus.

The owner claimed one of the leashes had broken. He said he didn’t realize one of his dogs had attacked a person, claiming he was also unaware he was being sought by police.

“I thought it was a dog that they were after, that they got at,” he said.

“I pulled my dogs back. I didn’t see her on the ground like I didn’t see her get bit … everything happened so fast, so I just pulled back. My dogs don’t attack people.”

The man went to apologize to Jasbir’s family on Friday.

Meanwhile, the dogs are currently in quarantine at Brampton Animal Services. It is up to the department to determine what will be done with the dogs.

Police said the investigation into the matter is continuing.
