Toronto police say a man in his 30s is dead after a targeted shooting Friday morning.
Police said they received reports of gunshots near St. Clarens Avenue and St. Clair Avenue West, west of Dufferin Street, at 11:40 a.m.
Duty Insp. Stacey Davis said a man was shot in a vehicle in the area and pronounced dead at the scene.
Davis said a gunman was seated in the passenger seat of a vehicle on a nearby side street, waiting for the victim to appear.
Police initially said there were reports of multiple victims, but later said there was only one man shot.
“There were some citizens that were able to get him out of the vehicle and start CPR and … our officers also did that outside of the vehicle,” Davis said.
Officers said there were two male suspects seen fleeing the area in a four-door sedan, though no description was provided.
Reports from the scene indicated there was possibly a second shooter but police weren’t able to confirm those reports as of Friday afternoon.
The vehicle the victim was in had California licence plates, though it’s unclear if he is from the U.S. Police haven’t released his identity as they continue to notify his family members.
“I was unloading the car and I heard the first shot,” witness Carlos Oliveira told Global News.
“I kind of froze beside the car. I didn’t know what to do — if I should duck, if I should not.”
Davis said at least 14 shell casings were recovered at the scene. She said while the shooting was targeted, it’s not known if it was gang-related.
The man’s death marks Toronto’s 33rd homicide of 2020.
