Peel Regional Police say they are investigating multiple crime scenes after a person died and another was injured following a shooting in Brampton early Monday morning.
Const. Heather Cannon said officers located two people, both with gunshot wounds, in a vehicle on Highway 410 south of Sandalwood Parkway at around 2:30 a.m.
Peel paramedics said one man suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local trauma centre and another man died at the scene.
Both men were in their 20s, paramedics said.
Cannon said that while officers were on the scene, they “had an interaction with a separate vehicle” and, due to that interaction, police notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) who have invoked their mandate.
The SIU, Ontario’s police watchdog, is an independent enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
Cannon said the homicide unit is investigating the death of the shooting victim on Highway 410 and the SIU is investigating the interaction Peel police officers reportedly had with another vehicle at the same location.
Monica Hudon, a spokesperson with the SIU, said late Monday that they are investigating the circumstances around a Peel police officer who discharged a firearm at an Audi SUV that was parked on the side of the highway next to a pick up truck.

Hudon said police were trying to block the Audi from going forward when the car reversed and attempted to move forward. An officer then fired multiple shots at the vehicle, which fled the scene northbound on Highway 410, Hudon said.
She said that vehicle was found abandoned in a residential area near Checkerberry Crescent and Geddes Lane. Police are still looking for the occupants of the Audi. Hudon said they do not know how many people were inside the Audi.

Hudon said it is not known if anyone was injured when police discharged their firearm at the vehicle. She also said the SIU is conducting a parallel investigation with Peel police.
“Somebody may or may not have been injured and so we need to be called in so that we can start fresh right at the beginning to see if this is something we need to continue to investigate,” Hudon said.
Police closed Highway 410 in both directions for most of the day. OPP issued an update just before 8:30 p.m. to advise the highway was reopened.
Police warned that due to the multiple scenes involved in the investigation, the affected roads wound be closed for quite some time.
