Halifax police question retired RCMP doctor as part of sexual assault investigation

Halifax Regional Police have arrested and interviewed a retired doctor as part of an ongoing investigation into sexual assault complaints within the RCMP.

A source close to the investigation tells Global News that police arrested Dr. Donald MacLeod Campbell Thursday.

The former RCMP doctor, who has been under investigation for more than a year, was known as “Dr. Fingers” by some.

Police say they are looking into more than 140 incidents based on allegations of sexual assault.

Complainants allege unwarranted rectal, breast and gynecological examinations during RCMP medical exams, mostly in the 1980s and 90s.

Police have not laid any criminal charges.

Campbell has told Global News previously he did nothing wrong and was conducting normal medical exams.

When reached by phone on Friday at his Halifax-area home, Campbell told Global News he had “no comment” on the new developments.

A second retired RCMP doctor under investigation for similar allegations in Toronto is apparently off the hook.

The Toronto Police Service reportedly decided not to lay criminal charges against John A. MacDougall.
