A man who escaped OPP custody in Cobourg on Sunday afternoon was quickly arrested at a nearby gas station.
According to Northumberland OPP, around 1 p.m. two special constables with the OPP’s offender transport unit were removing a man from the holding cells at the OPP Cobourg detachment when the man suddenly assaulted the constables before being placed in a vehicle destined for the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay.
OPP say the man then fled on foot to the nearby Shell gas station on Division Street where he allegedly attempted to steal two vehicles.
Today’s Northumberland reports a woman intervened and “slugged” the man just as OPP and Cobourg Police Service officers arrived on scene and arrested him.
The two special constables were treated at hospital for minor injuries and later released, OPP said.
OPP stated on Monday said the accused was in custody after being arrested on Saturday on drug-trafficking charges.
Jordan Wendell Chauncey Reid, 26, of Cobourg, was initially charged with two counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (heroin and opioid), assault with intent to resist arrest and four counts of failure to comply with a recognizance. He was held for a wash (weekends and statutory holidays) court hearing on Sunday where he was remanded into custody.
Additionally he has been charged with escape from lawful custody, two counts of assaulting a peace officer and robbery with intent.
He is scheduled for a wash court appearance on Monday.
