A kitten was found with his head stuck in a boat in Malagash, N.S. Luckily, a local man came to the rescue – Aug 2, 2018

It happened in the middle of a raging rainstorm.

Kelly Tattrie heard a faint whimper coming from his dad’s boat parked across the road in Malagash, N.S.

“I got to thinking, ‘I wonder what that is over there, if something is in trouble or not,'” he said.

Tattrie ventured across the road shocked by what he found stuck in one of the holes in the side of the boat.

“We took a walk across the road and found a little kitty, with its head stuck up through there, hanging there,” he said.

The tiny kitten was hanging from his neck, crying out in fear and clinging to life.

Tattrie had no idea that his cat, killed three days earlier when it was struck by a car, had delivered her kittens in his dad’s old boat.

Fearing the small feline had gone without food or water for days and concerned the weak little kitten might drown in the downpour, Tattrie and his father, Kenny Tattrie, rushed in to help.

“I squirted some Dawn detergent and try to make him slippery to slide him down through, but it wasn’t working,” he said.

“We tried to chisel a piece out and that wasn’t going to work because it was probably about an inch thick.”

Tattrie was left with no other option: the only way to save the little guy was to sacrifice a piece of the boat.

“[My dad] wasn’t real keen on cutting a hole in his boat but it was the only way to get it,” Tattrie said.

Using a sabre saw they cut the boat, hoping to free the little guy, who appeared to be fading fast.

“I shoved my finger down beside the cat there so we didn’t cut it and dad took this saw here and just started sawing away here until we got him free.  The cat wasn’t really liking it but it was the only way we could save him,” Tattrie said.

When they finally pulled him out — covered in dust and dish soap — the little fella was in pretty bad shape.

But they were able to clean him up and gave him a bowl of milk.

Within a half an hour of saving him, Allison Jamieson, whose own cat had recently passed away, adopted the kitten.

She’s decided to name him “Sable.”

“I knew he was the kitty for me and I went and got him that night,” Jamieson said.
