The patience of motorists in West Hamilton is being put to the test.

Road resurfacing work began Tuesday night on Main Street West from Cootes Drive to near Highway 403.

And to no one’s surprise, the project is causing longer than normal traffic delays on that stretch, as well as for drivers who are getting off the highway on the Aberdeen and Main Street West exits.

The $1.4 million so-called “shave and pave” in the eastbound lanes is being undertaken to address heavy damage resulting from this winter’s freeze-thaw conditions.

Ward 1 Coun. Aidan Johnson notes that the “gateway” to McMaster is one of the most heavily travelled routes in the city, with 55,000 vehicle trips each day.

Half of the cost will be funded through his Ward 1 area rating budget.

A “shave and pave” involves milling away the top two inches of pavement and replacing it with new blacktop.

The work is expected to be complete by March 16.
