If you’re looking for popular costume ideas for Halloween, look no further than some of the top-grossing films of the year for inspiration.
According to a recent report by Google Trends, broken down by U.S. states, Wonder Woman was dubbed the most-searched Halloween costume of the year, Vogue reports.
Other popular choices include classics like witch costumes and Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn.

What not to do this year (or ever)
While costume ideas are really endless (you can be anything from a sexy goldfish to a sexy squirrel), one thing you want to avoid this season (and any season) is cultural appropriation.
Recently, a report from the Toronto Star found racist Halloween costumes were still widely available at stores across the city.
“Dream Catcher Cutie” and “Rising Sun Princess” costumes can still be purchased, along with other Indigenous accessories, the site notes.
Dr. Neal Lester, an English professor at Arizona State University, told Uproxx offensive and racist costumes with blackface and brownface is often the result of a lack of knowledge.
“You can appreciate another’s culture without trying to be it or imitate it,” Lester told the site. “Whenever you see someone’s culture and you decide you want to perform it, that’s when it becomes a problem. That has nothing to do with whether you appreciate it.”
So what does work? Below, we take a look at some of the most popular costume ideas through trend reports from Pinterest and Google, as well as pop culture, to narrow down what you’ll be seeing on Oct. 31. And if you want to stick out from the crowd, we suggest avoiding these trendy looks.
Wonder Woman

As the second most grossing film of 2017, it’s no surprise one of the most popular costumes this year includes Wonder Woman. While some cosplay costumes can start at $500, you can also pick up the costume at most Halloween retailers.
Clowns and more clowns
“Clown” and “It” were also popular Google searches this year for Halloween costumes, and with the re-release of the It movie last month, it only makes sense Pennywise is on top of most people’s scary costume list.
Unicorns
Maybe it has to do with the popularity of the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino in the summer, but both unicorn costumes and makeup were on the rise for search on sites like Pinterest and Google.

Game of Thrones
The Game of Thrones series continues to be one of the most talked-about and watched television series of the year. Fortunately, this means you have a variety of old and new characters to choose from.
Snapchat Hot Dog

The app’s dancing hot dog filter was arguably its biggest hit in 2017, and last week, Amazon released a full dancing hot dog costume for $80.
Salt Bae
For any meme-lover, Salt Bae has to be one of the easiest costumes to pull off this year. And while we don’t recommend walking around slicing meat like the real Salt Bae Nusret Gökçe, we do think the salt is a good added touch.
Beauty and the Beast
The best thing about Beauty and the Beast Halloween costumes is a long list of possible characters and makeup options. You can either make your own costume (you don’t need many supplies for a simple Belle look) or opt for a ready-made one.

Baywatch
