61 drivers ticketed in distracted-driving blitz by N.B. RCMP over holiday weekend

Sixty-one drivers in New Brunswick were caught in a distracted driving initiative this past holiday weekend.

According to the Codiac Regional RCMP, 31 distracted driving tickets were handed out on Aug. 3.

“In many cases, drivers told us they were just holding the cellphone in their hand and not using it,” says Staff Sgt. Éric Larose, Codiac Regional RCMP. “According to the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act, a driver holding a phone or electronic device is considered to be using it.”

The Mounties also ticketed 30 drivers for various traffic offences including speeding, expired vehicle registration and distracted driving.

The fine for distracted driving is $172.50 and a loss of three points on a driver’s licence.
