A duplex in the community of Cranston was destroyed by a fire on Thursday evening.
Crews were called to the 200 block of Cranford Park S.E. at around 11 p.m.
When they arrived, firefighters found flames coming from a two-storey townhome.
Additional fire crews were called to the scene to help battle the blaze and keep it from spreading to neighbouring homes.
“There were approximately 40 firefighters on scene to fight the fire,” Batt. Chief Stu Laird said.
Firefighters used large-volume water streams to extinguish the flames.
When fire crews swept the building, they found a cat dead inside the home. They say another cat named Ozzy, which is a grey-and-black tabby with white paws, is still missing.
Another resident was able to escape with her two dogs before the fire took over the home.
A 35-year-old man was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.
The Calgary Fire Department said Friday that the fire destroyed both halves of the duplex, displacing six residents. It also caused damaged to two neighbouring homes.
According to fire investigators, the blaze appears to have originated at the back exterior of the duplex.
