Preparations are well underway as a well known New Brunswick family that has spread out around the country aims to make it into the record books this weekend.
The 250th Steeves family reunion is taking place in the small town of Hillsborough, and they’re hoping enough family will come to break the Guinness World Record for having the most people with the same last name gathered together in one place.
“We have the world record event Saturday night at the Moncton Coliseum” organizer Sara Robinson said.

That record is now held by the Gallagher family and sits at just over 1,400 people.
“Hillsborough is not going to know what hit it. It is going to be crazy down here” said Diane Steeves Prosser, who plans to take in some of the events planned throughout the week-long celebration.
Robinson says the Steeves family first settled in Hillsborough 250 years ago. Today, it’s estimated there are at least 300,000 Steeves descendants worldwide.
As many as 10,000 of them are expected to show up this weekend.
“We have about 1,000 people who have purchased tickets so far,” said Robinson.
She admits that may seem like a small number, but she says the last time a Steeves reunion was held in Hillsborough, back in 1966, only 1,400 people registered, but 9,000 showed up. She is hoping the same thing happens again this year.
The Steeves flags are hoisted and the hustle and bustle has already begun in the tiny town.
Ashley Steeves came all the way from Toronto, excited to meet up with thousands of her cousins.
“I just think that is is exciting that there are so many Steeves coming from everywhere,” she said.
