“Greg [Berlanti, the show’s producer] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” said Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg in a statement. “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

Hoechlin, 28, recently starred in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! along with Blake Jenner (in a weird coincidence, the husband of Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist), who has also appeared on the caped-crusader show.

His other recent appearances include the movie Road to Perdition and two upcoming Fifty Shades films.
