EDMONTON — Nearly one person a week was the victim of a homicide in Edmonton in 2016.
By the end of 2016, 41 homicides were declared by Edmonton police and just under half of them were the result of shootings. In some cases, homicides declared in 2016 were actually historic files, as the deaths happened in previous years. Sixteen victims were shot, 12 were stabbed, five were beaten to death with another weapon.

For context, in 2011, Edmonton hit a record of 50 homicides, according to Statistics Canada.
Here is a map showing where each 2016 crime occurred, and below is a list of each death, including when it happened, how the victim died (if known) and other pertinent details.

Jan. 1: Homicide 1
Victim: Abdikadir Mohamed, 25
Where: Near 93 Street & 111 Avenue
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Mohamed died in hospital nearly a week after being shot in downtown Edmonton. He was one of two men shot near a lounge during the early morning hours on New Year’s Day. No arrests have been made.

Jan. 7: Homicide 2
Victim: David Gordon Fleming, 28
Where: A home on 114 Street, near 134 Avenue
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Police were called just before 5 a.m. to a weapons complaint at a home in Edmonton’s Kensington area. Officers arrived to find Fleming dead inside the house. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

Jan. 14: Homicide 3
Victim: Derek Alexander Garnham, 32
Where: Near 34 Street & 119 Avenue
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Police were called by EMS to a home in Edmonton’s Abbottsfield area around 7 p.m. Garnham was found dead inside an area residence. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

Jan. 24: Homicide 4
Victim: Alex John Sinclair, 53
Where: In a vehicle near 119 Avenue & 80 Street
Cause of death: Stabbing
What happened? Alex John Sinclair died in hospital after he was found in a vehicle with obvious signs of trauma the evening of Sunday, Jan. 24. An autopsy confirmed the 53-year-old died after being stabbed. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

Feb. 21: Homicide 5
Victim: Darren Douglas Sinner, 41
Where: Found near the Rogers Place construction site at 104 Avenue & 101 Street
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Darren Douglas Sinner, of Edmonton, died after being shot. Police believe it may have happened after a verbal exchange between Sinner and one or more suspects. He was found near the Rogers Place construction site the morning of Sunday, Feb. 21. Police want to talk to a woman they said helped a Baccarat Casino security officer administer first aid to Sinner. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

Feb. 21: Homicide 6
Victim: William John Patterson, 37
Where: At a home near Chappelle Drive & Claxton Loop
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Patterson died after being shot in the Heritage Valley area. Police were called to a weapons complaint in deep southwest Edmonton at around 4:55 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21. Patterson was taken to hospital and later died of his injuries. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

March 23: Homicides 7 & 8
Victim: Irfan Ahmed Qureshi, 37 & Suzanne Marie Tran, 27
Where: A duplex near 49A Ave. & 213 Street
Cause of death: Gunshot wounds
What happened? Qureshi and Tran died after being shot. It’s believed the pair were in a relationship and had criminal records. The home had been for sale, and the bodies were found by a real estate agent on a Wednesday afternoon. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

March 26: Homicide 9
Victim: Jeremy Randall Nattress, 36
Where: In a hotel suite near 34 Street & 118 Avenue
Cause of death: Stabbing
What happened? Nattress was stabbed to death in east Edmonton. His body was found inside a suite at the Travelodge Beverly Crest hotel. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

March 27: Homicide 10
Victim: Bruce Peter Macdonald, 50
Where: Near 129 Avenue & 58 Street
Cause of death: Stabbing
What happened? Macdonald was found with “signs of trauma” on the east side of the Belvedere LRT Station parking lot in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 27. He died in hospital. Police are searching for two female suspects.

March 27: Homicide 11
Victim: Amin Mohammed Abdullahi, 30
Where: Outside a bar on 105 Street near 81 Avenue
Cause of death: Multiple gunshot wounds
What happened? Abdullahi died after being shot several times in an early Sunday morning shooting just off Whyte Avenue. A second man was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident outside Tribute Lounge on 105 Street. Arman Dhillion, 21, turned himself in to police less than a week after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

March 28: Homicide 12
Victim: Lisa Kristine Randhawa, 42
Where: Apartment building at 114 Avenue & 132 Street
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma
What happened? Randhawa was found dead in an apartment by a family member who went to check on her well-being. Police said her body showed signs of blunt force trauma, and suggested it could have been from several days before she was found. Police did not say whether they have any suspects in custody.

Victim: Adrian Stanley Redcrow, 42
Where: An alley near 116 Avenue & 97 Street
Cause of death: Stabbing
What happened? Redcrow’s body was found with “obvious signs of trauma” on a Friday night in the Alberta Avenue area. An autopsy determined he was stabbed to death. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

April 10: Homicide 14
Victim: Brad MacDonald, 37
Where: A ditch near Stony Plain Road & Winterburn Road
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma
What happened? The body of MacDonald, who was from Nova Scotia, was found in a ditch in the far west end of the city on a Sunday morning. Police said there were obvious sign of trauma, and investigators thought his body may have been there overnight before it was discovered. Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

April 16: Homicide 15
Victim: Kelly Thompson, 34
Where: 115 Avenue & 137 Street
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma to the head
What happened? Thompson died in hospital two days after being beaten with baseball bats in west Edmonton. It was reported that on the evening of Thursday, April 14, four or five suspects wearing dark clothing and hoods got out of a vehicle and hit Thompson multiple times with baseball bats. The vehicle then reportedly left the scene. Investigators said they were searching for multiple suspects, and believed this was not a random attack.

April 18: Homicide 16
Victim: Nicole Leeanne Cooney, 30
Where: A home near 117th Avenue & 128th Street
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Cooney died after being shot in west Edmonton’s Inglewood area in the early morning hours of Monday, April 18. Police called to investigate her death also responded to a weapons complaint nearby, and later determined the two calls were connected. A suspect was arrested later in the morning.
Lenny Lavallee, 32, was charged with first-degree murder, as well as numerous firearms-relates charges.

March 21: Homicide 17 (Historic homicide)
Victim: Awet Ghebre, 23
Where: Body found near 34 Street & 257 Avenue
Cause of death: Unknown
What happened? Ghebre has been missing for over nine months when his remains were found on March 21 in the area of 34 St and 257 Avenue. A month later his death was deemed a homicide. Police believe Awet Ghebre was last seen by his family on June 14, 2015 and last heard from when he called his family on June 17. He was reported missing on July 1, 2015.

April 19: Homicide 18
Victim: Blair William Schmidt, 30
Where: Apartment building on 106 Street, near 122 Street
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Schmidt was found dead in a burnt-out apartment in central Edmonton’s Westmount neighbourhood on the morning of Tuesday, April 19. An autopsy found he died from a gunshot wound, and investigators said the fire was deliberately set. Police were initially not able to identify him, they released the victim’s description. He was identified a day later.

April 20: Homicide 19
Victim: Nikita Lee Healy, 26
Where: Apartment building on 110 Avenue, near 84 Street
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Healy was found dead inside a three-storey walk up apartment building across the street from Stadium LRT Station on Wednesday, April 20. Police said she was shot.

May 3: Homicide 20
Victim: Sabrina Papin, 27
Where: Edmonton-area hospital
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Papin died an an Edmonton-area hospital in May 3 after being shot. Papin and a 31-year-old man showed up at the hospital, both suffering from gun shot wounds.
May 5: Homicide 21
Victim: Robert Paul Loyer, 46
Where: 106 Avenue, just west of 96 Street
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma
What happened? Police were called to 106 Avenue, just west of 96 Street, just before 1 a.m Thursday morning. Robert Paul Loyer, 46, was found found bleeding on the ground and suffering from obvious signs of trauma. Police attempted CPR, but the he died on scene.

May 19: Homicide 22
Victim: Louie De Sousa Sa, 61
Where: Apartment building on 123 Avenue, near 82 Street
Cause of death: Trauma to his upper body
What happened? Louie De Sousa Sa was found dead in a north Edmonton apartment suite, and police said he died from trauma to his upper body. Malory Lajimodiere was arrested and charged in the death. De Sousa Sa and Lajimodiere knew each other and lived in the same residence. The relationship between the pair is not known.

May 27: Homicide 23
Victim: Gherezghiher (Gary) Yemane, 63
Where: Ozerna Road, between 69 Street and 165 Avenue
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Gherezghiher (Gary) Yemane was out for an evening walk when he was shot several times. The 63-year-old man was found lying on the ground surrounded by blood at around 8:45 p.m. Police do not known if the shooting was random or targeted.

June 17: Homicide 24
Victim: Armando Cosmea-Aspillaga, 38
Where: Home on Whitemud Road near 53 Avenue
Cause of death: Unconfirmed (Autopsy said “stab wounds during a life-ending assault”)
What happened? Roberto Robles, 73, is facing charges of second-degree murder after his son-in-law Armando Cosmea-Aspillaga, 38, was found dead inside a house in southwest Edmonton’s Riverbend area. An autopsy determined Cosmea-Aspillaga “sustained stab wounds during a life-ending assault.” However, police said the medical examiner needs to conduct “further analysis” before formally confirming the cause of death.

June 26: Homicide 25
Victim: Ryan Paul Jimmo, 34
Where: A parking lot near Whyte Avenue and 101 Street
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma after being run over by a vehicle
What happened? Mixed martial arts fighter Ryan Jimmo was killed in a fatal hit-and-run in a parking lot near Whyte Avenue. Anthony Getschel, 23, was charged with second-degree murder, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving death. Jordan Wagner, 21, was charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Feb. 3, 2016 : Homicide 26 (2015 historic homicide)
Victim: Warren Todd McLeod, 47
Where: Apartment unit near 100 Avenue and 114 Street
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma (head injury)
What happened? On March 18, 2015, Warren McLeod was found unconscious on the floor of a downtown apartment. He was taken to hospital, and died 11 months later from injuries he incurred in the attack. An autopsy revealed he died of complications from “blunt force head injuries.” In July, 47-year-old Joelle Reich and charged her with manslaughter, causing death by criminal negligence and failing to provide the necessaries of life. While McLeod was injured in 2015 and died in early 2016, the death wasn’t declared a homicide until five months later.

July 8: Homicide 27
Victim: Randy James Munian, 40
Where: Near a TD Canada Trust bank near 25 Avenue and Hewes Way
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Randy James Munian, 40, died of a gunshot wound to the torso after he, and another man, tried to rob two GardaWorld armoured car guards at a bank in Mill Woods.

July 27 : Homicide 28
Victim: Daniel Holly, 34
Where: 436 Brintnell Boulevard
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? Daniel Holly and a woman were found in the area suffering from gunshot wounds. Suspects then fled from police and fired at officers in the process, EPS said. Holly died of his injuries, while the woman’s wounds were said to be non-life-threatening.

July 31: Homicide 29
Victim: Donald Doucette, 51
Where: An alley near 107A Avenue and 96 Street
Cause of death: Blunt abdominal trauma
What happened? Police said Donald Doucette was found dead near Commonwealth Stadium after being attacked and robbed by a private security guard who worked in the area.

August 4: Homicide 30
Victim: Mahamat Adam Hosky, 31
Where: Apartment building near 111 Avenue and 132 Street
Cause of death: Not released
What happened? The body of Mahamat Adam Hosky, 31, was found inside an apartment suite in the Westmount area. Police said the death was not considered suspicious at the time. An autopsy was done later that day, but police have not revealed how Hosky died “to protect the ongoing investigation.”

Sept. 2: Homicide 31,32
Victims: Joao Nascimento, 93, and Maria Nascimento, 81
Where: Home on 111 Avenue near 111 Street.
Cause of death: Multiple stab wounds
What happened? Police believe 93-year-old Joao Nascimento and his 81-year-old wife Maria were killed during a random home invasion. Edward Kyle Roberts, 31, of Edmonton has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Sept. 25: Homicide 33
Victim: Christopher Lee Giroux, 46
Where: Near 107 Avenue and 110 Street
Cause of death: Not released
What happened? Police said Giroux was found with “obvious trauma to his chest” but did not say exactly what caused his death. Levi Denim Simpson, 26, was charged with first-degree murder, unlawful confinement, robbery, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, aggravated sexual assault, possession of an identity document and disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence. Duncan Farrell, 22, was later arrested and also charged with first-degree murder.

Oct. 4: Homicide 34
Victim: Omar Terrence Albert, 23
Where: 1077 McConachie Blvd
Cause of death: Gunshot wound
What happened? 23-year-old Omar Terrence Albert was shot during a “wrongfully targeted” violent home invasion. Police said a couple who was home at the time was tied up and blindfolded before being “severely assaulted” and asked to hand over drugs and money. Police said Albert was one of three men suspected of being involved in the home invasion. During the break in, Albert was shot. He was found in the basement and rushed to hospital, where he died. Police do not believe the couple shot the intruder.

Oct. 7 : Homicide 35
Victim: Phu Phan, 30
Where: Front yard of a home in the northwest Rapperswill neighbourhood
Cause of death: Multiple gunshot wounds
What happened? According to witnesses, Phu Phan was shot while in his truck in front of a duplex in the Rapperswill area. Emergency aid was given, but Phan died on scene. Police have not made any arrests in the drive by shooting.

Oct. 22: Homicide 36
Victim: Christopher Fawcett, 19
Where: Parking lot of the Alfred H. Savage Centre near Fox Drive and Whitemud Drive
Cause of death: Stabbing
What happened? Christopher Fawcett died in a parking lot after being stabbed. Connor James Miller was arrested shortly after and has been charged with second-degree murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest.

Jan. 27: Homicide 37
Victim: Szymon Kalich, 33
Where: Home near 33 Street and 18 Avenue
Cause of death: Fentanyl overdose
What happened? 33-year-old Szymon Kalich died from a fentanyl overdose after being found in the hallway of home on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at around 1:30 p.m. Following an “extensive investigation,” homicide detectives charged 25-year-old Jordan Yarmey with manslaughter in connection with the death. This is the first time Edmonton police have laid charges in the case of a fentanyl death.

Oct. 16, 2015 : Homicide 38
Victim: Shalaina Arcand, 5
Where: An apartment building near 116 Avenue and 124 Street
Cause of death: Head trauma
What happened? On Oct. 12, 2015, five-year-old Shalaina Arcand was taken to hospital apparent head injuries, and died four days later. The Medical Examiner’s office finalized autopsy results in October 2016, which found the girl died as a result of head trauma. Lauren Lafleche, Arcand’s mother, has since been charged with second-degree murder and assault with a weapon.

Oct. 31: Homicide 39
Victim: Kendall Dale Rowan, 28
Where: A west Edmonton apartment building near 156 Street and 87 Avenue
Cause of death: Stabbing
What happened? Kendall Dale Rowan, 28, was found unresponsive in an apartment in west Edmonton, and died of a stab wound. No arrests have been made.

Nov. 13: Homicide 40
Victim: Leonardo Duran Ibanez, 42
Where: On a sidewalk near 97 Street and 119 Avenue
Cause of death: Severe head trauma after injuries sustained during beating
What happened? Leonardo Duran Ibanez, 42, a visitor from Colombia, was walking home with his brother-in-law early Sunday morning after an evening at a bar, when a group of four strangers came up to them and tried to pick a fight. Police said Ibanez was attacked and severely beaten. He was taken to hospital, where he died.

Dec. 23: Homicide 41
Victim: Rachael Longridge, 21
Where: A house near 122 Avenue and 132 Street
Cause of death: “Multiple sharp forced injuries”
What happened? Rachael Longridge was a 21-year-old recent nursing school graduate who was set to start a new job at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in early 2017 when she was killed. Police were called to the home in the Sherbrooke neighbourhood, where Longridge was found with severe injuries and died at the scene. The young woman’s mother, 50-year-old Christine Longridge, was charged with second-degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon. Family and friends said Christine Longridge suffered from mental health issues and had been struggling for many years.

In 2015, Edmonton recorded 30 homicides. Edmonton saw 35 homicides in 2014, 29 in 2013 and 30 in 2012. Edmonton hit a record of 50 homicides in 2011, according to Statistics Canada.
