Winnipeg’s Chantal Van Landeghem will be swimming at the Rio Summer Olympic Games later this year.
Van Landeghem, 22, qualified in the 100m freestyle event at the Canadian Olympic Trials on Saturday in Toronto. She finished second in the women’s 100m freestyle final but her time of 53.91 was still good enough to qualify for the Olympics.
The former Manta Swim Club member also qualified for the Olympics in the 4 x 100m women’s freestyle relay.
Van Landeghem will attempt to qualify in another event on Sunday night as she swims in the women’s 50m freestyle event final. She posted the fastest time in the preliminary races on Sunday morning with a swim of 25.07 to secure the middle lane in the final.
Van Landeghem was recently chosen as the Manitoba Female Athlete of the year after swimming to three medals at the 2015 Pan-American Games.
Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic swim teams will be officially announced on Sunday night.
