George Lucas gets candid about ‘breaking up’ with ‘Star Wars’

Original Star Wars director George Lucas is moving forward, and not looking back.

When Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens opens in theatres on Dec. 18, it’ll be the first installment of the sci-fi fantasy movie series that Lucas hasn’t been intimately involved in. Is the legendary director OK with that? It seems so.

“It’s a family soap opera, it’s all about generations,” said Lucas. “They decided they didn’t want to use [my] stories, they decided they were going to go do their own thing. They weren’t that keen to have me involved.”

Lucas concedes that his stories probably wouldn’t have worked for a modern audience anyway.

“If I got in there, I would just cause trouble,” he said. “I said ‘OK, I’ll go my way and I’ll let them go their way.'”
