Tropical storm Carlos expected to become hurricane

TORONTO – Tropical Storm Carlos, which developed Thursday off the Mexican coast in the Pacific Ocean, is expected to develop into a hurricane over the weekend.

As of Friday morning, the storm was stationary southwest of Acapulco. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami anticipates a slow movement to the northwest over the weekend.

Tropical storm watches are in effect from Acapulco to Zihuatanejo. Maximum sustained winds are around 95 km/h with higher gusts and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 130 km from the centre of the storm.

Heavy rain could occur over part of the southern coast of Mexico over the next few days and swells along the coast could become life-threatening.

It’s expected that the hurricane will reach Category 1 status on Saturday.
