9-year-old’s library stand deemed illegal

WATCH ABOVE: A 9-year-old’s ‘Little Free Library’ stand in a Kansas City suburb has been shut down after it was deemed an illegal structure.

TORONTO – “Take a book. Leave a book.” That’s the motto for the now defunct Little Free Library in Leawood, Kansas.

Nine-year-old Spencer Collins was inspired by the Little Free Library movement and wanted to share his passion for reading with his neighbourhood.

But the Kansas City suburb deemed the box-sized library an illegal structure.

“When we got home from vacation, there was a letter from the City of Leawood saying that it was in code violation and it needed to be down by [June 19] or we would receive a citation,” Spencer’s mother, Sarah Collins told KMBC.

According to the City of Leawood, buildings that aren’t attached to homes are not allowed on the property and because the library was a free-standing structure on the Collins’ front yard, it was considered illegal.

Richard Coleman, Leawood’s director of community development told KMBC that Leawood city council will look to see if they can amend the current ordinance.
