The biggest awards show of the year, the Oscars, honoured the best movies of 2019 on Sunday night in Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.
Korean movie Parasite made history as the first foreign-language film to ever win the best picture Oscar. Throughout the night, Parasite won four Oscars across the major categories, including best international film and best director.
Among this year’s Academy Award nominees were some familiar names: Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Kathy Bates.
Few categories were more certain coming into the Oscars than best supporting actor, which Pitt has had locked down all awards season. Pitt earlier shared in the best picture win for 12 Years a Slave, for which he was a producer.
“They told me I have 45 seconds to speak, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week,” said Pitt, alluding to the impeachment hearings.
Pitt said the honour had given him reason to reflect on his fairy-tale journey in the film industry, going back to when he moved to Los Angeles from Missouri. Once upon a time in Hollywood, said Pitt. “Ain’t that the truth.”
Three-time nominee Laura Dern took home best supporting actress for playing a divorce lawyer in the Netflix drama Marriage Story — the first-ever Oscar awarded to an actor for a Netflix movie.

As it did last year, the annual Dolby Theatre ceremony kicked off without a host. Janelle Monae opened the show entering a Mister Rogers set and singing A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Singing to the front row, Monae dropped her bowler hat on the head of Tom Hanks, who was nominated for his performance as Fred Rogers. A medley continued with Billy Porter joining in, as Monae segued into her song Come Alive.
“I’m so proud to be standing here as a black queer artist telling stories,” said Monae. “Happy Black History Month.”
Two former Oscar hosts, Chris Rock and Steve Martin, dropped in to supply an opening monologue. Martin called it “an incredible demotion.” Martin noted that something was missing from this year’s directing nominees. “Vaginas!” Rock replied.
Parasite and director Bong Joon Ho won best screenplay, the first Asian writer to take the prize, and Parasite became the first Korean film to win an Oscar.

“Regardless of the outcome, I think the door has been opened,” Bong said on the red carpet. “I think as long as we continue this effort, the door will just open wider and wider.”
The movie also won best international film, an award it was expected to win, and Bong won best director, a big surprise considering the juggernaut competitors like Quentin Tarantino, Sam Mendes and Martin Scorsese in the category.
Joaquin Phoenix delivered a long speech about inequality after he picked up the best actor Oscar for Joker, and Renee Zellweger won the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy.
It is Phoenix’s first Oscar and fourth nomination. Widely praised for performances in films ranging from Gladiator to the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, a best actor win had proved elusive for Phoenix.
In his acceptance speech, Phoenix said he did not feel elevated above any of his fellow nominees. He said he didn’t know what he would be if not for acting. As for Zellweger, it’s her second Oscar; she won the supporting actress award in 2004 for Cold Mountain.
