WINNIPEG – Sport Manitoba recognized some of their outstanding coaches on Saturday and Jim Daly was honoured with the Global News Active for Life Award.

Global Winnipeg’s Mitch Rosset presented Daly the award at the annual Coaching Manitoba Impact Awards for his many years of service in the sport of athletics.

Daly, 89, started the track and field club at the University of Manitoba back in 1949 and coached at the school until 1996. He also spearheaded the group that brought the 1967 Pan-Am Games to Winnipeg. Daly has coached athletics at Fort Richmond Collegiate for the last 10 years.

“That’s the best part is seeing people realize that they have some ability and they can improve and can have a good time in the process.” Daly said.

“”It keeps me fit. I can still jog and walk and even run and I guess I wouldn’t be doing that if I wasn’t going to be coaching that day.”

Daly was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and in 2015 the University of Manitoba re-named their indoor track facility after him, the James Daly Fieldhouse. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2001 and became a member of the Order of Manitoba in 2000.

“Coaches dedicate so much time to make the athletes who they are.” said Coaching Manitoba’s Manager of Coaching Susan Lamboo. “And the coaches deserve a huge amount of recognition.”
