Woman’s obituary asks readers to ‘drive Stephen Harper from office’

Mary Catherine Finn also wished for readers to fix the CBC. Mario Beauregard / The Canadian Press

Peterborough native Mary Catherine Finn passed away quietly in her sleep on July 19, but her obituary was hardly quiet.

The obituary appeared in newspapers on July 25, and paints a vivid picture of the 72-year-old grandmother. “She was a voracious reader, a lover of life, and a fearless defender of the world of ideas,” it reads. “She loved family, fine wine and good food, in that order, preferably shared over a candle-lit table with good music and excellent company.”

The obituary goes on to note that she always believed that author Margaret Atwood was vastly overrated and Margaret Laurence equally underrated.

Also: “In lieu of donations, Catherine would want you to do everything you can to drive Stephen Harper from office, right out of the country, and into the deep blue sea if possible. Also, she would like you to fix the CBC.”
