Calgary weather: Snow and chilly temperatures to continue

CALGARY – Snowy and cold weather that started over the weekend isn’t anticipated to end for another few days.

The snow began to fall early Sunday morning, and is expected to continue until Tuesday.

Calgary’s seven day weather forecast

As soon as the first few flakes were spotted, City of Calgary road crews begin clearing priority routes and dispensing anti-icing agents.

Officials say they were prepared for the snowfall, and had all available crews as well as several contractors working to tackle trouble spots like hills, bridge decks and ramps.

By Sunday night, 11.4 cm of snow had fallen at the Calgary International Airport.

The City of Calgary says snow plows and sanders will continue to clear city streets, and will be executing tandem plows as part of their attack.

“We line up snow plows on every lane, and we drive them straight into the downtown core,” explains Anna Blaxley. “It means one pass – and you’ve got a clean road down to the pavement.

“Calgarians will have the best possible driving surface we can give them, based on the weather conditions.”

Calgary police say between 1 a.m. and 11  a.m. on Monday, there were 66 collisions reported, including eight with injures.

No Snow Route Parking Ban anticipated

Although a thick blank of snow is still covering Calgary, the City of Calgary says they don’t anticipate they will need to call a Snow Route Parking Ban.

Snow Routes include major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes, and are marked by blue signs with a white snowflake.

A map and full list of Snow Route locations is available on Calgary.ca/snow.
